Awakening the Fool

This year's Scorched Nuts is just 20 days away, only 3 more days to get $25 tickets. And the theme of this year's event is "Awakenings." One definition of Awakenings is:

An "awakening" is a moment of clarity in which a new insight or understanding is gained.  With this new awareness the experience of life is seen differently, and new possibilities are opened.  Changes in patterns of thought, emotions, and behavior occur.  An awakening allows the possibility of growth to new levels of psychological and spiritual maturity. 

Which is a very succinct summation of the Hero's Journey, a journey that I have read a thousand times and that I continue to live in various stages and parts of my life. To my great delight, I recently learned something that I knew once, a long time ago, that links Tarot and the Hero's Journey. You may ask, how can you learn something that you knew? Well, that's easy enough. Some things we learn and forget that we've learned them, or don't know that's how we learned them and then a new connection gets made and we realize that we knew something in a way we couldn't put words to and thus we learn it again.

For certain Tarot Card readings, the querent (the person asking the question) is asked to pick a card to represent them. I have always and forever picked the Fool as my card in the deck.

Sewing Pieces

Whilst I have showcased a number of the pieces Nae is working on having at our theme camp, we will also be showcasing the talents of Linda, who is very handy with a needle and thread. Above is a beautiful rendition of the KOI Burner logo.

More Knitting Projects

This is a nice throw pillow that Nae has made. The back is a soft fleece and she's debating whether she really wants to take it SN and risk giving it away or to keep it and use it herself.

These two pictures are a basket Nae whipped up. It still needs treated with liquid starch to give it stiffness but it's a nice basket.

And this is a nice square basket, currently being used to hold yarn, go figure!

Apples and Scrubbies

So, Nae has been busy knitting up projects. She completed the green apple version of the red version:

These are 8" wide by 6" high and made out of chenille, which turns them into very soft, microfiber projects that have lots of uses, from washcloth to hot pads to whatever you can imagine for them.













Next is a scrubby pattern that Nae has been working on. This heart shaped scrubby is made out of 100% cotton and has an opening in the top that allows you to put a bar of soap inside. I tried the one she made last night during my shower this morning and have to say that it was a nice piece of work.

This is a knitted market bag with two straps. It's  fairly deep, made from cotton.

Welcome

Fabrics and Fortunes is a themed camp debuting atScorched Nuts 2010, the regional Burning Man event for Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. In this blog we'll be talking about our plans and showing off some of what we will have in our camp.

Our official description reads:

Come join us for Tarot Card Readings and a place to pull out your yarns or sewing or other fiber arts.

Knitting, sewing, spinning, weaving, all have been community events for ages. We invite you to join us for some shade and to share techniques. We will have spare yarn and needles if you want to learn how to knit. We'd also love to teach you about Mindful Knitting, the art of knitting meditatively; as well as how to use yarn and other fibers to be able to dispose of stress and cares.

If you're not into Fiber Arts, take a moment to contemplate the ages old art of Cartomancy: divination from cards. We'll tell you what's in the cards for you with a simple three card reading to look at your past, present and future or you can request a more detailed and nuanced reading.

But what does that mean?

Well, it means we'll have an place for an on-going Stitch and Bitch throughout the event. Come and share your knitting expertise, learn a new trick, learn how to knit. We'll have some simple patterns that should allow you to pick up needles and yarn for the first time and walk out with a sense of accomplishment at a pattern finished. If there are enough people interested, we might see about creating a SN 2010 afghan where everyone who wants to knit or crochet a square can add to the finished project.

If you're fibers tend to be more in line with thread than yarn, we'll have some supplies for that as well, we may even have some quilting going on. If you'd be interested in trying to to help with an SN 2010 quilt, mention it in the comments and we'll see what happens.
